Help, My 48yr old son is on disability medicare with no other insurance.

He had triple bypass 10/03/11. We need to find a dentist who will take medicare in our area for he needs to have all of his teeth extracted and dentures put in. His cardiologist has given the ok for this. He is going to have a defibralotor placed, but the cardiologist wants his teeth done first. I am sure he will have to be put in the hospital overnight for this procedure, which medicare will pay for the hospital stay. Do you know of a dentist in our area that would do this? His nourishment has gone down hill because of his bad teeth, his weight has decreased a lot and he needs a dentist really bad.

We live in the Port St Lucie, Florida area

My recommendation is that you check for oral surgeons in this area, as this procedure is not one that a typical general dentist would most likely want to tackle. As a former Medical Assistant, we often got calls from prospective patients asking if we accepted a certain type of insurance and we were very happy to answer. The easiest way to find a dentist or specialist in your area who accepts your insurance is to simply call the office and ask. Get referrals from friends or families as a first step, but you can always simply check your yellow pages and start making calls.

Another route to go is to check online at a site such as healthgrades.com, since this site, and others as well, typically list insurances which the various dentists and specialists accept. It is always best to double check with the receptionist when you call for an appointment since sometimes it changes.

Next option is to call Medicare and ask for a dental provider list. You can also check this web page:

Here is a partial list or oral surgeons in Pt. St. Lucie, a good place to start. I would give these offices a call and explain your situation and ask if they accept Medicare. I believe these specialists do accept Medicaid so I am guessing they would also accept Medicare patients.

Blessings for you and your son. I hope this procedure will improve his condition.

I am not sure how it works in Florida but dental care is not covered by medicare in Missouri. Adults in Missouri can be covered by Medicaid if you have a letter of medical necessity from your primary care physician. It will only cover the extractions and does not cover a denture. I would first call your insurance and see if dental is a covered benefit. Next, you may want to find a federally qualified health center. Often times these facilities can help offer these services at lower fee schedule. If Medicare offers dental in Florida I would bet the health center would be in network for medicare. While many general dentists may not want a case like this in private practice, dentists at health centers encounter patients such as your son on a routine basis.
